Translating
I have been doing translating, editing and proofreading, mostly on a freelance basis for 25 years. Work is done at all levels from various texts (policies, documents, examinations, brochures, reports, yearbooks, manuals, auditory, textbooks, study guides, etc.)
Fields include advertising, educational (both for schools and universities), human resources and business, manufacturing, technical to semi-technical, psychological, medical and legal.
I keep to the *SATI code of ethics:
- To endeavour constantly to achieve the highest possible quality in respect of accuracy of rendering, terminological correctness, language and style.
- To accept full responsibility for my translations and to bring unresolved problems to the attention of my clients/employers.
- To accept no work that is beyond me (with regard to deadline and knowledge of source language, target language and subject), except with the knowledge of my clients, and to keep to agreed deadlines and forms of delivery.
- Constantly to pursue self-improvement in order to improve the quality of my work.
- To share my professional knowledge with other members, but to maintain a relationship of trust with my clients and to treat all information that comes to my attention in the course of my work as confidential.
- Not to accept any work that, in my opinion, is intended for unlawful or dishonest purposes or is contrary to the public interest.
- To be guided in negotiating remuneration by the principle of equitability, and in particular to refrain from charging excessive rates.
- To respect all rights of the author and the client, and specifically copyright.
- Always to uphold the highest ethical and moral standards in my dealings with my clients and in the practice of my occupation as translator.
- To take part in the activities of the Institute and always to conduct myself in such a way that my conduct and the quality of my work will be to the credit of the Institute and translation as an occupation.
