Tutoring

Why do learners need help?

  • A sudden drop in marks due to changes of school or circumstances affects the ability to learn.
  • Missing out causes a snowball effect and marks do not reflect capability.
  • Personality clash with teacher causes less information being absorbed and loss of interest.
  • A mental block about the language or section of work causes negative attitude or loss of self-esteem.
  • Bright learners want to excel in anticipation of university exemption and further studies.

I creatively assist Grade 8 - 12 learners with present curriculum, homework and preparation for tests and exams. Skype sessions aim to build confidence. I have extensive IEB, ACE, Cambridge: IGCSE, AS and A levels, and NSC and long distance tutoring experience as well as in teaching foreigners and adults. (See Tutors of Cambridge)

During the initial lesson assessment is done to determine what the student can and can’t do, to determine previous progress, needs, nature and reasons for stumbling-blocks, i.e. where and why learning did not take place and then to offer support and feedback and then work out a tailor made program, taking personality, strengths and weakness into consideration. I initially focus on bridging problems while following through by explaining recent work.

Learners are initially assisted with attitude problems should they exist, but student must take responsibility for outcomes. Confidence is restored by mentorship and motivation and assisting with time management. Lessons are not merely ‘extra lessons’, but also remedial in nature which include practical and written tasks, questioning, observation and completion of worksheets. Apart from specific curriculum requirements, learners are exposed to various texts, including my own material. Learners are encouraged and taught to listen, write, read and converse. Weekly assignments help me to monitor progress and identify further obstacles.

Assessment and progress reports are available on request.
